Croatia is a fairly straightforward destination for visiting riders.
Here are a few things to note.
- Riding is on the right-hand side of the road and overtaking on the left.
- Watch your speed! The speed limit on motorways varies between 110km/h (68mph) and 130km/h (80mph). Stick to 90km/h (56mph) on main roads outside built-up areas, and 50km/h (31mph) if you’re in a built-up area.
- Police tolerates going 10kms/h above the speed limit. So you will notice all the locals driving at least 10 to 20kms/h above the speed limit. Riding goes even faster.
- Alcohol limits are low in comparison with some countries:
0.05% for drivers of private vehicles, and zero if you’re under 24. - Watch for the speeding cameras. You will notice a blue or white sign on the road with camera drawn on it. But in some parts of Croatia there are no signs at all!
- Always keep in mind that a car might come out on your way from some side alley. Backroads and village roads are locals’ exits to main roads and they drive very relaxed so be aware of that when you’re riding around.
- Police can issue on-the-spot fines for traffic offences and can hold on to your passport until you pay the fine.
- Passing cars on the road is ok, as long as you are absolutely sure there is no threat to you or the car drivers.
- Feel free to cut in line at the ferry ports if it’s busy. Don’t worry, motorcycles always go to the front.
- The motorways are subject to tolls, which you can pay by card or in cash.
