Trans Euro Trail in Croatia
- Trans Euro Trail is a stretch of more than 80,000kms of offroad trails and connecting roads from the edge of Africa to the Arctic Circle created by the adventure motorcycle community and provided for free. All
you need is a light offroad motorcycle, an app to download the GPX track and you’re good to go!
Croatia is a part of that adventurous community with its 371km of trail from the mountainous region bordering Slovenia to the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. Tar, gravel, mud, sand, rock, river and grass. Some are wide enough for a car but many are single track. From the high peaks and winding trails to pine forests and flatlands. From quite rocky areas to only few meadows to relax you in your saddle. Not that much lenght in Croatia, but
it is a fun and exciting way to cross half of Croatia and it can be done easily in 2 days.
Legal white roads/dirt roads in Croatia usually connect areas between cities, valleys or mountains. Some are old trading roads, some were built by the forestry department and some are remnants of the recent war in the 1990’s. Unfortunately, that war has left some of its souvenirs in the shape on mines all over mountains. Areas are being cleaned more and more but there is so much of it that it will take time to clean it all up. So it is essential to respect the signs and not take detours from the track.
In all of the Croatian track there are only two sections considered to be harder, locally know “filter” hill or TET named “parts hill”. One is in the northern mountanious part and it is a landslide full of big rolling rocks, and one is in the southern part in Cerovac and it is a rocky steep hairpin. The rest is more or less doable following the TET suggested size of the bike, luggage and load. Our motorcycles make a
perfect choice for this kind of ride and terrain.
A certain degree of riding and mechanical competence is required. Tricky sections can be avoided by taking tar detours but it all up to
you, your riding skills and mood.
If you would like to ride TET and not sure whether you can do it by yourslef, we recommend booking our guide who will take you up to the start in the north via mostly off-road tracks and down the TET track. Altogether it would take 3 of 4 days of riding from and back to Split. Duration depends on your free time to ride and whether you would like to spend more time off-road in the mountains to get there. And that is something we gladly recommend – more time to ride off-road!
Few tips while riding TET :
- Respect the locals, their private properties and livestock on the way
- Watch out for that livestock on the way
- Make sure you have appropriate gear (gloves, protectors, body armor, ADV boots, raincoat or some warmer clothes as it tends to be shifty in the mountains regardless the weather in lower areas)
- Make sure you have appropriate tools to fix the simplest issues on the go, if needed
- Keep moderated speed – it’s a journey not a race
- Know your bike and yourself, make sure you are fit for it (respect for your own limits and those of your bike)
- Ride with an awareness of the terrain, surface and in anticipation of unexpected hazards
- Expect to have some technical parts; slippery rocks or deep mud; lift the bike or do some repairs
- Ride in group, at least 2 of riders together
- The best time to ride TET is spring, summer, autumn. Bear in mind that spring and autumn season can be shifty with the weather so pay attention to the forecast before you decide to ride.
- It’s illegal to wild camp, but in practice it’s allowed if you do not bother others, leave litter or light a fire. The coastline is very arid so lighting a fire is strictly forbidden while camping. Private land is not always fenced, so be careful where you set the camp for the night.
