VIS

Two days of off-road

with local gastronomy, splash in the sea

and exploring the abandoned military infrastruction

Vis –  the island of Stiniva bay, proclaimed the most beautiful beach in Europe, twice. And the island of long and turbulent history. A small island with a lot more than you would expect!

Vis is the smallest and farthest inhabitated island off the Croatian land.  Because of its position in the Adriatic it had a turbulent history and always an important role, in any culture and politics. In Greek and later Roman times it was an important self-run colonia called Issa. Venetians, Austrians, French, British and the Italians all had battles around the island and a short time of having Vis in their possession.

All because of its strategical position in the Adriatic, safe and closed harbor in Vis and fresh water springs all over the island. In the 20th century it became a shelter of another kind – during WW2 Tito, the president of  the former socialist country of Yugoslavia was hiding in a cave in the middle of the island for moths, creating the idea of Yugoslavia and all the military infrastruction he would built later. Today those abandoned structures are war monuments luckily never used for the purpose they were built for.

More important more impressive than military structures is the nature and landscape. Vis has numerous pebble stone beaches, hidden coves, cliffs to jump from and a crystal clear sea, so clean you can eat the salt off your skin.

All of the mentioned historical changes are visible on all sides of the island, but on this tour we will explore the most recent and the most interesting ones – submarine tunnels, underground communication stations, canon stations guarding all sides of the island and we ride the WW2 airplane base.

Give yourself a break from the regular touristic sites you would visit and let us show you more than you could imagine it exists.

This is a two day tour of light off-road ride around the island with a visit to abandoned military structures. Since Vis still has poor ferry line connections and it takes 2 and a half hour to get there, it is worth visiting in no less than 2 days.

  • We can accommodate most dietary restrictions, please note that in your booking form!
  • We offer additional motorcycle equipment for rent in our office: body armor, knee protectors, ADV boots for a price of 35 Euros per person!
  • After the return, there is a room to change clothes and a possibility of taking a shower in our office!

Story about Vis you can read on our blog page.

Itinerary

Our first stop is British fortress overlooking the entrance to the bay of Vis, then a ride to military station guarding the approach from the north. Next we ride off-road to the base in the west of the island to enter rifle nests and walking the underground tunnels. After a lunch break in Komiža, a small pictoresque fishermen place, we ride to the eastern base of Komiža. This is the only base with three cannons still left in their position towards Italy. Next is the ride for the top of Vis with a view to Komiža and sometimes all the way to Italy, if the weather is really clear. Gastronomical pleasure at the local family farmstead is the last stop in the day. There you will be served produces grown at the area, our most traditional dish called Peka and wine from the vineyard at the farmstead. That's not where the story ends – if you take a walk behind the house you will find a cave built as a refuge for the soldiers during the WW2. Later we go for planned accommodation or stay at the property and sleep in tents.

Next day we ride across the abandoned military airfield from the WW2, after which we ride for the underground communication center hidden on top the hill. We will walk the most part of the tunnels, if you are not claustrophobic. Not something you would find just riding around even if someone directed you to it. Next is pleasure time on a beach. After we relax we catch the ferry back to Split at given time.

  1. Petra
    Motorcycle tour

I planned to visit this beautiful, smallest and most remote island in Croatia for a long time. But as it always happens, life takes you here, takes you there, and something always “comes up”. However, I finally got to do that trip and visit the island of Vis, and it was definitely worth the wait.

During the visit I, of course, received the best possible welcome. Andrea, our tour guide, is such a bright, fun and smart person who you simply can never get tired of listening to and you are always keen to hear what else she has to say.

She took us along the old, hidden roads all over the island and to places which are usually perceived as impossible to reach. Well, that’s where Andrea takes you with a motorbike, to the top of all the peaks, to see the best views and shares with you incredible stories and very interesting details of the places you visit and all the places you are surrounded by.

This experience created lasting impressions which are as vivid today as they were upon my immediate return from the trip. I can’t wait to visit Vis again!
